Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th, 2008
Veterans Memorial Park, 199 Gipsy Trail Rd., Carmel, NY.
** FREE ADMISSION ** and ** FREE PARKING **
Join the fun and learn a bit of Native American history at Veterans Memorial Park for an Intertribal Pow Wow to honor the memory of a forgotten hero, Chief Daniel Nimham, his son Abraham, and the Wappinger Indians of the Hudson Valley who gave their lives for liberty during the American Revolution. This event is a great way for children to learn history without sitting in a classroom reading a book, which can be very boring. What kid doesn’t love exploring a Tee Pee! The event is free and everyone is welcome.
Gil Tarbox, the organizer of the Intertribal Pow Wow and Lead Singer of the Nimham Mountain Singers, said that this Pow Wow is different from anything you have seen before because “it’s the only group that talks and explains the history of the Wappinger Indians.” It seems that other Pow Wow’s are roped off not allowing visitors to get too close or join in. “Our Pow Wow is based on family traditions when different tribes use to get together and exchange medicines, stories, and share experiences. We encourage participation, we want everyone to get involved. We want to educate people about the Native Americans who lived in their backyards. We don’t rope off our Pow Wow. Instead we move the picnic tables to the center so people can relax, enjoy traditional food, and spend the whole day with us.”
Learn about the proud Wappinger Indians who lived throughout Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in eastern New York State. Fighting alongside the Patriots, they helped push the British out of Boston, fought at Monmouth and other important Revolutionary War battles, and were instrumental in helping the colonials win their war of Independence. Both father and son, along with 40 Wappinger and Stockbridge Indians, lost their lives at the battle of Cortlandt’s Ridge in the Bronx during an ambush in August of 1778.
History not really your thing? How about getting the chance to see a real wolf up close and personal, without the danger? Or Birds of Prey in flight as Brian Bradley demonstrates his “Skyhunters”? Perhaps shop over 30 craft vendors who will be demonstrating how their items are made or just enjoy the Intertribal dance…and everyone is welcome to join.
