Free “Smartnet” Programs and Classes
Free Programs and Classes on Smart Use of Technology and The Internet in back at Mahopac Public Library as their popular “SmartNet” series continues through Fall and Winter, 2009. Presentations and hands-on computer classes will inform community members of all ages about knowledgeable use of technology and the Internet. Programs for adults and teens will include topics such as protecting your privacy on-line, social networking, “cyber-bullying,” internet filtering and how to conduct research on-line using reliable sources.
Presenters for the Fall and Winter 2009 SmartNet Series include Mahopac Central School District’s Information Technology Officer Tracey Shaffer, Putnam County’s Assistant District Attorney Joseph Charbonneau, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officers, and members of the professional staff of the Mahopac Public Library.
The SmartNet Program was developed by the Library’s Internet-Use Task Force, which convened in January 2008 to review the Library’s internet-use policies and practices and design educational public programs. “The Internet and modern communication technology are here to stay, and there is so much to learn about how to use these tools wisely. The Library is proud to offer the Smartnet series. The SmartNet classes and presentations are provided by individuals in our community who are uniquely qualified to address the community’s needs and concerns,” said Joseph Tock, local attorney and member of the Library’s Board of Trustees. “Many community members, age 6 to 60, have taken advantage of the Mahopac Public Library’s SmartNet Programs so far, and we look forward to serving many more patrons in the Fall and Winter of 2009.”
Members of the Internet-Use Task Force are Patricia Kaufman, Library Director, Trustees David Gagliardi, Thomas Honohan, Joseph Tock, and Alice Walsh; Community members Lieutenant Brian Karst (Carmel Police Dept.), Joseph DeMarzo (Putnam County Youth Bureau), Donald Beverly (Mahopac Central School District), and Matthew Ganis (IBM). Many of the Library’s professional staff contributed to the group’s work as needed.
