During the hustle and bustle of this time of year, the invitation to take a break and visit the Mahopac Public Library 3rd Art Gallery Exhibit that is on until December 31st, could be a pleasant surprise! Myself, and 7 other artists from the Artist’s Corner in Carmel, are exhibiting our work in a variety of styles and mediums!!!!

4+ DAYS  OF BLACK OUT!!!

Finally over!

Who said you cannot go back in life? In thus 4 days it’s exactly what I did.  Just as I reach retirement age – I went back to my youth. Not by choice. Once again survive but with a little hindsight for the morrow. Make sure the gas tank in the car is filled, drive around collecting free wood pallets for the fireplace, clean and stack them properly; Once again brush my teeth, wash my face (with soap) using only one cup of warm water and two sheets of paper towel;  Make a perfect toast on open fire for breakfast and delicious whole roasted corn for lunch.; keep the fire going as long as possible into the night despite the wet wood; appreciate and enjoy  hot showers at friend’s house (c&c) who got power back way before me; Dry out my big towel by keeping it in my car (solar power); Judy E. the wonderful quilt you made for me, kept me warm at nights (of about 20 degrees) as an extra blanket; the  new innovative flashlight  let me read late into the nights without going blind;   having  no computer, fax and phone with only limited use of cell phone, liberated me to ‘enjoy’ washing  dishes in cold water, cooking only at day time; chopping wood and collecting kindling. Thanks to Greg I got and learnt the use of dry ice (thanks NYSEG) and kept the food from getting spoiled … and above all, keeping my cool and sense of humor.  Till today Wednesday.

All of the sudden I needed my computer really bad, smoky house was good, maybe, for Smoky Bear, but I wanted to open doors and windows for the sunny day outside; be warm inside my home not out in the car, facing the sun (solar energy heat) while endlessly recharging my cell phone; wanted to sleep again without  cover, wanted to not to be cold again in the long dark evening that sent me out to the movies  (Footloose & Anonymous – both good)  or to the lecture halls. Wanted to stay home, enjoy my evening tea while reading news from Israel.  Yes, I can go back to my youth, camping out for days to end. But, do I want to? At least not in the winter.

And today, at temperature of 35 INSIDE the house, a bunch of good looking guys from Plattsburgh NY heard my cry and came to the rescue.  I was sooooo happpy to see them. They were polite and cheerful. Promised to replace the pole we lost in no time so I can be warm again. I wanted to buy them Pizza, but someone else beat me to it. So left my house open, while I am gone, for them to use (bathroom and alike) they thanked be again and again.

Only when I was few miles away I remembered, there is no running water in the house today till evening….

I call it life.

The Carmel Alternative High School has been in existence since 1999. This program is an integral part of the community and has benefited many students who were not successful in the regular, mainstreamed high
school. This program is strongly supported by the Board of Education and the members of the community, but funding is always limited.

The school is run by two teachers and a guidance counselor; there is no additional aids or monitors as part of the program. Although we receive some funding, the “extras” in our program are provided by the teachers and students’ families who are a part of the program.

We are planning on conducting a Penny Social on Friday, December 2nd in order to raise monies for our program. These funds will be used to provide senior Alternative HS students with scholarships and fund student enrichment activities.

The Penny Social will also include a bake sale, a silent auction as well as a 50/50 raffle. We are asking
your company/organization to make a donation or provide a service in order to help fund our event. The types of items we are able to accept must be brand new and will be greatly appreciated! Also, remember that
by making a donation, that you are eligible for a tax deduction.

By making a donation, we are guaranteeing you free advertising for your company/organization! This is also a “virtual penny social” meaning that we will be photographing all of our donations and creating
a computer database. The database will be mass-emailed to the entire Carmel community and will also be advertised on social networking sites.

Applications are now available for the 24th Annual Putnam Hospital Center Reservoir Classic, sponsored by the Carmel-Kent Lions Club, which will be held on Sunday, September 25th.  Sanctioned by the Westchester Road Runners, it will start and finish at Putnam Hospital Center on Stoneleigh Avenue in Carmel; the race route will run along the scenic Croton Falls Reservoir.

Check-in will be held from 8:00 until 9:15 am.  At 9:00 am, the PHC Reservoir Classic will kick off with a 2-mile fun run/walk, followed by the 5-mile road race at 9:45 am; the awards ceremony will begin at 11:00 am. Please CLICK HERE for application.

Commemorative T-shirts and race packages will be given to the first 200 registrants.  The PHC Reservoir Classic is designed to promote health and fitness, to benefit Putnam Hospital Center and to provide a forum in which heart and/or physically challenged individuals (with physician’s consent) can participate as well.

The event will feature a three-mile walk and Zumbathon, as well as kids activities and raffles. Food from premier local restaurants will be offered. Tiki Barber, Community and Disability Advocate for the Opportunity League, will make an appearance.

The proceeds from this event will be used to continue the development for the Agency’s Health, Arts, and Education Center and Opportunity League Park for children and adults from the community.

The Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Association, a 501c(3) Health and Human Services Agency, has provided services to the Hudson Valley region for over 20 years. The mission of the Agency is to advocate for, as well as provide direct services to individuals who experience disabilities, and their families, and to help provide these individuals with lifelong opportunities and choices that promote their health, independence, and an enhanced quality of life within the community. The Agency was established in response to unmet needs for specialized care within the community, and its programs encompass the following areas: Clinical & Health Services including specialized dental services; Children’s Services including Early Intervention, Pre-School, Daycare, and Pediatric Clinical Services; Adult Day Programs including Specialized Traumatic Brain Injury Programs; Residential Alternatives including Supported Living; Advocacy; Service Coordination; Home Service; and Supported Employment. In addition, the Agency provides some of these services to members of the community who might not have the means to secure quality health care or support services.

The Walk for Opportunity is presented by the Friends of the Putnam County Performing Arts, Inc., a New York based Not-for-Profit, whose mission is to provide assistance to local performing arts groups throughout Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester counties. The Friends of the Putnam County Performing Arts, Inc., has been partnering with the Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Association for over four years to create an accessible venue for the Arts groups of our communities. This partnership has enabled both entities to continue their goal of enhancing the quality of life for everyone.

The Opportunity League is a public/private partnership of national and local leaders in sports, recreation, education, and community development. The mission of the Opportunity League is to promote health, wellness, independence, and an enhanced quality of life through integrated recreation and sports competition for people of all abilities in community based, accessible, multi-use parks. The Opportunity League has partnered with the Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Association to build one of these parks in Southeast.

This June 26th, we’re rededicating the Sanctuary after three years of intense fundraising and restoration.

A Brief History.

The Lake Mahopac Methodist Church was first organized as a society on July 14th, 1822 at the home of Benjamin Townherd. It is the oldest Methodist church in Putnam County. The church was originally called the Chapel at Carmel Big Pond, this being the former name of Lake Mahopac.

The first church building was erected in 1826 and stood on a tract of land that had been donated by Nathaniel Crane. This land now includes the site of the Catholic Church of St John the Evangelist.

The original Methodist church was a stately New England-style white frame building with a balcony overlooking the beautiful lake.

As the decades went by, the building must have declined to a point that prompted the Rev. Hart Fuller, pastor from 1911-1914, to write in the church historical journal that “what this place needs is a new church and a prayer meeting”.Some nine years later, that came to pass. The land for the new church was donated by Hilary Chambers.

The building still standing today was finished during the ministry of the Rev. Henry Lincoln and was formally dedicated on July 30th, 1922 .The beautiful Gothic-style sanctuary boasts stained-glass windows that are dedicated to former church members and trustees. A pipe organ was installed to “secure good music” for the church.The building cost $25,000 to complete and was paid for in large part by “generous giving on the part of summer visitors” who used the area and lake as their summer retreat. The Parish Hall with its meeting rooms and kitchen was erected in 1957.That same year, in celebration of the church’s 135th Anniversary,

Pastor Lester McGonagle wrote, “Where would the church be without the dedicated men and women who loved the Lord and His Son? Lake Mahopac Methodist Church will continue to grow in winning new people to Christ and spreading the Gospel of love unto all. May God continue to bless and nurture His good people in Mahopac”.Recent renovations with money raised by church members and the local community have restored the church to its original beauty.

The Lake Mahopac United Methodist Church Sanctuary will be rededicated in a special worship service on Sunday, June 26th at 10.00am. All are welcome. And all are welcome to join us for refreshments in the Parish Hall afterwards.
