Dear Fellow Animal Lovers,

            Greetings. My name is Lisa Andrade and I am a former kennel worker at the Putnam Humane Society in Carmel, NY, and the author of several books. Like many of you, I have a dream… a BIG dream. A dream to help others in need. My sole purpose in life is dedicating myself to providing tender loving care to the animals at PHS and to seek assistance for the old, run-down, dilapidated shelter located on Old Route 6.

            In 2004 I wrote a letter to my Congressman describing the terrible living conditions at the humane society for our beloved, furry friends and how the weathered building had literally been falling apart, inside and out. A few months later I was amazed to open my mailbox and see that my letter had been forwarded by my Congressman to the Department of State. And in that mailbox was a grant in the amount of $5,000 bearing my name alongside the Putnam Humane Society’s name. It felt like I had hit the lottery for our animals. That money was used to transform the linen room into a much needed medical room. The grant could not have come in at a better time.

            On September 13, 2009, I was honored with the title of being named “Hometown Hero” by a local radio station for my devotion and commitment to the animals at the shelter. It is an honor I take very seriously and one that I will never take for granted. I have also written several books in which I dedicated a full page solely to the Putnam Humane Society with hopes that kind-hearted people would inquire about giving donations of time, money or cat/dog toys. And at each book-signing I hold, I set up a hand-painted toy box personally decorated with love & Swarovski crystals so that people may drop off a dog bone or a toy for the cats and dogs at the shelter. It is such a rewarding feeling to be doing something more for the humane society.

            As I’ve said before, I have a dream… a BIG DREAM, like many of you. My dream coincides with a motto which comes from a well-known wedding planner on television, David Tutera, in which he reminds each of the brides, “DREAM BIG. AND THEN DREAM BIGGER.” And boy, do I have BIG dreams for our beloved animals at the shelter with your help!!

            Fast forward to December 2011. The shelter still stands at the same location in even worse shape as it was back in 2004. The old, weathered building has really taken a beating, especially this past year from the remnants of an earthquake, and not just one, but two major hurricanes which took down many trees and caused irreversible damage to the already worn-out shelter. Our beloved cats and dogs deserve better than this.

            I took great pride in working at a job that was so personal and rewarding in which allowed me to connect with the most precious gifts of creation and which also allowed me to be the best I can be…compassionate, caring, kind, loving…and most of all, grateful for having the most wonderful job for ten years, working with the most wonderful creatures. What an incredible milestone to have achieved and surpassed.

            I have a dream, and you have a dream. My dream is to secure an even BIGGER grant for the ever-so-deserving Putnam Humane Society residents. David Tutera envisions a dream… and then makes his come true, please help me make my dreams come true for the PHS animals. Not only do I stand by David’s dreams and motto, but I also stand by the Putnam Humane Society’s motto which states: “Kindness, Justice & Mercy to All Living Creatures.”

            Please be my David Tutera of Putnam and/or Westchester County, NY. All I ask for is assistance in helping my dreams (BIG DREAMS) come true for the residents at the Putnam Humane Society in Carmel, NY.

We have dozens of dogs and felines to own,

they’re waiting for you to come and take them home.

Kittens are brought in to us without their mother,

people find them in boxes with no food, nuzzling each other.

Dogs are found tied up outside to our front gate,

we take them in and feed them with no moment to waste.

Some of their stories are sad, some are just cold,

and the rest of their stories we will never know.

But one thing you can be 100% sure of,

is that all of these creatures want and need to be loved.

We honor and live up to our motto which features:

Sunday, January 08, 2012 from 11:00 am- 3:00 pm, the Taconic Outdoor Education Center opens its doors once again to the public for its annual Winterfest. Come alone or with family and friends and be part of the National Winter Trails Day.

Enjoy a winter day outdoors. As part of National Winter Trails Day we will have Tubbs snowshoes available for use courtesy of Hudson Valley Outfitters, of Cold Spring, NY.On a first come, first served basis, participants will have a chance to use a pair of snowshoes for a short period of time. Garrison Fish & Game Club will be ice fishing on Duck Pond, come join them and learn about this fun way to fish in the winter. REI will also be on hand. Let the Instructors from REI’s Outdoor School show you how to set up a comfortable Winter Camp site, as well as an Emergency Backcountry Shelter.

The back hill will be open for tubing, the lake open for skating (bring your own skates or “boot” skate). In the Lodge, food will be available along with crafts, Putnam Highland Audubon and Guiding Eyes for the Blind. REI will also offer mini clinics covering: Winter clothing, XC Skiing and Ice Climbing. We will finish the day with a wildlife presentation at 3:00 by Bill Robinson.

Our weight-loss challenges are our most popular events because people lose at least a pant size in 5-6 weeks. This time we extended it to 8 weeks because we our contestant to lose 2 pant sizes!! Each team trains together 3 hours per week and at the end of 8 weeks the team with the highest %of inches lost (average) is crowned the Champs! The winners will receive 4 more week for training plus other prizes!!

Depot Wine and Liquor, a busy, upscale retail establishment, will hold its eagerly-awaited “Second Annual Tasting Extravaganza” on Saturday, December 10th from 1 – 5PM, announced the store’s manager Ryan Venezia.  The tasting fete is doubling as a fundraiser:  10% of the sales from all wines on that day will be donated to United Way of Putnam County.

Loyal customers will get the chance to sample over 50 wines, spirits and cordials from around the world.  A good wine should accompany good food, of which there will be a plentiful offering from local gourmet restaurants near Depot’s shopping center.  On the menu too are wine lectures, prizes, giveaways and live music by local bands.

“It’s going to be a fun day for our customers,” says Venezia.  “For people who are shopping for the holidays, they will get to sample a vast array of wine and spirits that will make for ideal holiday gifts.”

A Boo-tiful Time at the Putnam Valley Library

Thursday, October 27th – Nearly 150 kids and their parents crowded the Putnam Valley Library yesterday afternoon for its annual Halloween Party.  Arts and crafts and glitter flew as kids created everything from ghost and pumpkin windsocks to candy apples of the paper kind to adorn their costumes and bags for Trick or Treat.

Other holiday events coming up at the Putnam Valley Library:

“Gingerbread House Party” – Whether their architectural talents lean toward I.M. Pei or Peanuts’ dog house, kids and parents are invited to create their own gingerbread houses at the Putnam Valley Library on Wednesday, November 30th at 4:30pm.  The library provides the graham cracker infrastructure; parents are encouraged to bring icing and the candy for decoration.  Admission is free.

“Book Sale/Crafts Fair” – The Putnam Valley Library will host its annual Holiday Book Sale and Crafts Fair on Saturday December 3rd (10am-3pm) and Sunday December 4 (Noon–3pm).  In addition to books donated from the community (calling all donations of new or gently used books, books on CD or cassettes, VHS or DVD videos and music CDs!), local craftspeople and artisans will show their wares.  Artists and craftspeople who wish to apply may contact Library Director Kathleen McLaughlin at 845-528-3242.

Applications are now available for the 24th Annual Putnam Hospital Center Reservoir Classic, sponsored by the Carmel-Kent Lions Club, which will be held on Sunday, September 25th.  Sanctioned by the Westchester Road Runners, it will start and finish at Putnam Hospital Center on Stoneleigh Avenue in Carmel; the race route will run along the scenic Croton Falls Reservoir.

Check-in will be held from 8:00 until 9:15 am.  At 9:00 am, the PHC Reservoir Classic will kick off with a 2-mile fun run/walk, followed by the 5-mile road race at 9:45 am; the awards ceremony will begin at 11:00 am. Please CLICK HERE for application.

Commemorative T-shirts and race packages will be given to the first 200 registrants.  The PHC Reservoir Classic is designed to promote health and fitness, to benefit Putnam Hospital Center and to provide a forum in which heart and/or physically challenged individuals (with physician’s consent) can participate as well.

Yes, they have great coffee drinks, and desserts, but also serve light food and ice cream.  They are open for breakfast, lunch and through the evening, 7 days a week.  But we go there, not just for this.  We go but because this is a place to go to, meet, and talk to friendly and nice people.  The weekend evenings have been particularly enjoyable this summer.  There is live music and the crowd (people of all ages, married or single) is open to meeting new people.  The owners are warm and friendly. Yes this is a business, but they consider it also a neighborhood.

Hanging out at Brooklyn is like sitting on the stoop in Brooklyn and talking to your neighbors, only you’re sitting on a beautiful terrace during the warm weather.  If you are not into bars but are looking for a place to go to, when you want to get out of the house for awhile, I recommend you go to Brooklyn

The best hammer throwers in the world swing the implement around their head one or two times, then spin their whole bodies around three or four times, and can launch the hammer more than 200 feet! While many well known hammer throwers have come from New York, there has never been as many talented young throwers coming from the Empire State all at one time.

At the USA Track and Field National Championships, held at the end of June in Eugene, Oregon, Matt DiBuono (New Rochelle, NY) competed in the men’s senior division. His throw of 239’ – 8” with the 16 pound hammer placed him third, officially earning him a spot on the USA National Team which will compete at the Track and Field World Championships in Daegu, South Korea at the end of August. In an event that often favors men in their thirties, this is quite an achievement for the 24-year-old DiBuono who is just two years out of Forham University. Currently ranked 18^th in the world, he is America’s newest Olympic hopeful for the summer games next year in London.

Alec Faldermeyer (Middletown, NY), was an indoor and outdoor All-American for UCLA in the weight and hammer throw, respectively. These accomplishments are especially remarkable considering he was a true freshman this past season! At the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships (for athletes under 20 years of age), Faldermeyer won, throwing the 13.2 pound hammer 241’ – 2”. Since he placed first, he will be representing team USA at the Pan-American Junior championships next month in Florida. On top of this, he is currently ranked 4^th in the world with the 13.2 pound hammer in the junior men’s (under 20) division.

Rudy Winkler (Sandlake, NY) had one of the most stellar sophomore years of high school any athlete can have. After winning the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in the weight throw, he won the National Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the 12 pound hammer with a throw of over 213 feet in June. Later in June, he won the USA Track and Field Youth National Championships (for athletes under 17 years of age), throwing 232’ – 10” with the 11 pound hammer, which is the international implement for athletes his age. This throw ranks him 8^th in the world for his age, and also qualifies him for the World Youth Championships in France next month.
