Our weight-loss challenges are our most popular events because people lose at least a pant size in 5-6 weeks. This time we extended it to 8 weeks because we our contestant to lose 2 pant sizes!! Each team trains together 3 hours per week and at the end of 8 weeks the team with the highest %of inches lost (average) is crowned the Champs! The winners will receive 4 more week for training plus other prizes!!

Yes, they have great coffee drinks, and desserts, but also serve light food and ice cream.  They are open for breakfast, lunch and through the evening, 7 days a week.  But we go there, not just for this.  We go but because this is a place to go to, meet, and talk to friendly and nice people.  The weekend evenings have been particularly enjoyable this summer.  There is live music and the crowd (people of all ages, married or single) is open to meeting new people.  The owners are warm and friendly. Yes this is a business, but they consider it also a neighborhood.

Hanging out at Brooklyn is like sitting on the stoop in Brooklyn and talking to your neighbors, only you’re sitting on a beautiful terrace during the warm weather.  If you are not into bars but are looking for a place to go to, when you want to get out of the house for awhile, I recommend you go to Brooklyn

The best hammer throwers in the world swing the implement around their head one or two times, then spin their whole bodies around three or four times, and can launch the hammer more than 200 feet! While many well known hammer throwers have come from New York, there has never been as many talented young throwers coming from the Empire State all at one time.

At the USA Track and Field National Championships, held at the end of June in Eugene, Oregon, Matt DiBuono (New Rochelle, NY) competed in the men’s senior division. His throw of 239’ – 8” with the 16 pound hammer placed him third, officially earning him a spot on the USA National Team which will compete at the Track and Field World Championships in Daegu, South Korea at the end of August. In an event that often favors men in their thirties, this is quite an achievement for the 24-year-old DiBuono who is just two years out of Forham University. Currently ranked 18^th in the world, he is America’s newest Olympic hopeful for the summer games next year in London.

Alec Faldermeyer (Middletown, NY), was an indoor and outdoor All-American for UCLA in the weight and hammer throw, respectively. These accomplishments are especially remarkable considering he was a true freshman this past season! At the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships (for athletes under 20 years of age), Faldermeyer won, throwing the 13.2 pound hammer 241’ – 2”. Since he placed first, he will be representing team USA at the Pan-American Junior championships next month in Florida. On top of this, he is currently ranked 4^th in the world with the 13.2 pound hammer in the junior men’s (under 20) division.

Rudy Winkler (Sandlake, NY) had one of the most stellar sophomore years of high school any athlete can have. After winning the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in the weight throw, he won the National Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the 12 pound hammer with a throw of over 213 feet in June. Later in June, he won the USA Track and Field Youth National Championships (for athletes under 17 years of age), throwing 232’ – 10” with the 11 pound hammer, which is the international implement for athletes his age. This throw ranks him 8^th in the world for his age, and also qualifies him for the World Youth Championships in France next month.

The event will be held at the Italian American Club of Mahopac at 141 Buckshollow Road, in Mahopac. Young ladies ages 13 to 18 and 5 to 9, who attend a Putnam County school or who live in Putnam County are eligible to enter this contest (you don’t have to be of Italian descent).

Participants will be judged in three categories: talent, evening gown / party dress, and question and answer. All contestants will receive gifts and the winners will also receive a cash award and will be formally crowned at the annual Columbus Day Dinner Dance at Villa Barone Hilltop Manor on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

The construction of a rain garden allows it fills with a few inches of water after a storm and the water slowly filters into the ground rather than running off into a storm drain.  As the suburbs grow, increased stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces creates problems such as local flooding, and carrying pollutants from streets and lawns into local lakes and streams.  By reducing stormwater runoff, rain gardens can be an important part of changing these trends. And while one rain garden may not make a big difference, collectively they produce substantial neighborhood and community environmental changes.

Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they generally don’t require fertilizer and are more tolerant of one’s local climate, soil, and water conditions, and attract local wildlife such as native birds. The plants may include a selection of wetland edge vegetation, such as wildflowers, sedges, rushes, ferns, shrubs and small trees.

To learn more about Rain Gardens, and to get planting ideas and instructions, individuals should attend the Rain Garden workshop offered at the Library on May 23.  This workshop is presented in cooperation with Cornell Cooperation Extension of Putnam County with support from the Friends of Mahopac Library. Buchanan’s black & white photographs capture a time when toys inspired imagination, creativity and playfulness.  As he states in his book, “I have attempted to create through my lens and my mind’s eye the momentary return of those days past, the days of simplicity, when everything seemed less complicated.”  Each photograph in the book is accompanied by a written statement – each toy depicted provides an opportunity to recall a childhood moment. Chinese checkers, a hobby horse, toy soldiers, and the Jack-in-the-Box bring to life a time when childhood was about being resourceful and playing with abandon, hiking into an imaginary wilderness, and playing hide-and-go-seek until it was too cold or too dark outside.

Buchanan has been an award-winning photographer for over thirty years, opening his commercial business while serving as a police officer in the town of Greenburgh, NY.  He has been working on his Old Toys project for over twenty years.  Buchanan is currently finishing two other books: The Lunch, a romance novel, and The Sensual Woman: 40 and Beyond, a photo book celebrating real women ages forty-one to sixty-two.
