When a Fire Fighter gets the call for help every moment becomes precious time needed to save lives. Hours of dedication and practice is required to quickly put on 75 pounds of gear and be ready for action.  A Fire Fighter’s goal is to be ready for a call in one minute or less.   Andrew Roberto, with two years under his belt at the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, shows us how a Fire Fighter gets safely and quickly into his protective gear.  Captain Joe Munch, a 20-year veteran, explains the technical aspects of the gear as well as some very important safety features developed since 9/11.  Watch the clip and be as impressed as we were.

Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department  -  A series of videos covering the daily activities of our local fire department. 

Vanilla Frappe

Ingredients:
16oz ice
Vanilla Syrup(8 Pumps)
Half/Half (1/2 cup)
Splash of iced coffee
Whipped Cream

1. Put vanilla, half/half, and iced coffee into a blender
2. Add ice
3. Turn blender on, and blend untill smooth(less than a minute)
4) Pour frappe into cup, and top with whipped cream

Turkey/Mozzarella Panini

Ingredients:
Club Roll
Sliced Turkey(3 slices)
Sliced Mozzarella(2 slices)
Roasted Red Peppers
Basil Pesto(1 Tablespoon)

1. Split the club roll in half
2. Spread sliced turkey on one half
3. Lay mozzarella on the other half
4. Spread pesto evenly on the mozzarella
5.  Lay peppers on the turkey
6. Put two halves together
7. Grill Panini for 2-3 minutes, or until brown grill marks appear
8. Cut in half and serve

“We have to save the Church; it is so beautiful with so much history.” That was the plea of Valerie Murphy, the Sunday School Teacher of Lake Mahopac Methodist Church as she begins to describe the situation at the church.

“This is a sad state for a church that began our community don’t you think?” Valerie, an active member of the community, and owner of Shirley Marie Realty in Mahopac, wonders sadly.  She is leading the campaign to save the Lake Mahopac Methodist Church, which will close its doors on June 29^th unless a miracle occurs.

Ms. Murphy explains that the church, located at Route 6 and Mt. Hope Road will be turned over to the Annual Conference (Methodist Church) in NYC.  “The Mahopac Trustees will no longer have any input as to what or whom will go there, or if it will be sold or not.  This property could possibly just sit abandoned for a long period.  No one locally will know its fate.  Think of what these two corners will look like over time?” she replies with concern.

The church was established in 1826 and has been overlooking Lake Mahopac since 1922. You can not see all of the quaint beauty of the stone church from Route 6 because the front of the building faces Lake Mahopac.  In 1922, there was no Route 6, and the small road that runs between the church and Mahopac Marine was the main road.  Hillary Chambers donated the land, and the local homeowners and summer visitors contributed the funds to build the church.  The white wooden structure that faces Route 6 is the addition built in 1947, which houses the Parish Hall.

Ms. Murphy reports that due to the continuous water overflowing from the new library and stream, the floor of the church has collapsed.   The church is in dire need of a new floor, and she estimates that the cost of the repairs will be about $100,000. The church is also without heat because the burner is located in the basement, which is flooded. 

At 9:00 am every Sunday church services continue in the Parish Hall.  Ms. Murphy is asking all Mahopac residents to get involved.  “Call your friends, relatives and associates. Tell them that it’s their last chance to save the First Church in Mahopac” she pleads.  “Mahopac was built around this church on the shores of our beautiful lake. Wonderful and amazing stories were created here, just ask Mae, our former Sunday School Teacher, who recently celebrated her 90^th birthday.”
