Do you want to provide healthier food for your family and help fight the child obesity epidemic? Then take a 'Step Up To Health" with 'Families Growing Together' - a year-long gardening program for 20 Putnam families with children.
This program will provide an opportunity to learn to plan a vegetable garden, grow vegetables from seed, nurture your plants – and your family - and harvest your crops at their best. Your children (5 and up) will have fun learning too. There will be games and activities, hands-on science experiments and kid-friendly recipes your children can prepare.
How does the program work? Each family will be given their own 20' x 20' garden plot for a year in the Tilly Foster Farm Community Garden in Brewster, NY. Every month starting October 20th, the families will learn something new about growing food and eating healthier. The program is designed to work with nature's calendar: preparing the garden in the fall, learning about plants in winter, and then taking advantage of the beautiful spring sun to start growing your crops. And while the group will meet only once a month, the garden can be tended to as often as you like!
What do you get when your family joins Families Growing Together? As one of the 20 Putnam County families to sign on for this program, you will be part of a new adventure and receive: A family garden plot for the year at the Tilly Foster Farm Community Garden in Brewster, Monthly classes, Organic gardening information, Kid-friendly science learning, Fun activity books for the kids, Nutrition lessons and cooking demonstrations, Lessons in starting from seed, transplanting, weeding and organic pest controls, Harvesting tips, Regular advice from Master Gardener volunteers

Tilly Foster Farm is open everyday from 10:00am - 4:00pm
The Whipple collection of rare and endangered farm animals will showcase Early American farm animals that cannot be seen by the public as a collection anywhere in the world except at the Tilly Foster Farm in Brewster. The collection this year has expanded to include:
Guinea hogs -- this critically endangered breeding pair was located at Saunders Farm in Vermont.
American Blue Rabbits -- the trio of critically endangered rabbits was located in Iowa and shipped to Tilly Foster in time for Easter.
Randall Lineback Cattle -- the rarest farm animals in the world are on display at Tilly Foster Farm. The herd has increased by three this year with two boys, Tillingham Foster and Rundell Bloomer, and one girl, Miss Tilly Foster.
American Mammoth Jack Donkey -- A descendent of the donkeys on President Washington's (who often stayed at Tilly Foster during the Revolution) Mt. Vernon Plantation. 'Nate' our resident donkey is famous for leading the Christmas parade up Main Street and for his notorious bray when separated from his beloved pony friend Cody.
