Oklahoma!, a classic musical, is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy, and Jud, the hired farmhand. The play takes place in 1906 in an Indian territory of the American West during the time when Oklahoma was established as a state. It tackles class issues between the farmers and the cowmen in the still-developing, rugged landscape of a state in its infancy as characters struggle to find hope, love and the fulfillment of “the American Dream.” It is also a romantic tale of love.

Rosie the Riveter is a symbol of the women who went to work in the factories, shipyards and plants during World War II.  Her story is wonderfully re-enacted in a one-act, one-woman play written by Adriana Rogers.  “Rosie the Riveter” will be performed by Ms. Rogers at the Mahopac Public Library on Saturday, March 13, at 2:00 pm; this play is appropriate for ages 8-98 and registration is requested.

During World War II when many men were sent off to war and so much new production was needed to support the war effort, there was a gross shortage of manpower to staff factories and manufacturing plants. As a result, propaganda was distributed through print, film and radio to encourage women to take over men’s jobs for the duration of the war. There was a catch, however. When the war was over, they were supposed to give the jobs right back.

The “Rosies” of World War II built bombs, staffed government offices, harvested crops, served as pilots, nurses or administrators, and volunteered at the Red Cross and Civil Defense offices. “Rosie” was an unmarried woman, a wife, a sister, a mother or a grandmother who went to work for better pay and because she felt that it was her duty to serve her country.  However, as soon as soldiers began to return home, women were forced out of these jobs, even if they had no other means of support.  Despite the way they were discarded at the end of the war, these female workers had much to do with the success of the United States during World War II and their contribution is not be forgotten.Adriana Rogers has written several plays including “Madam,” “Zoot Suit Swing Time Murders,” Murder at the Sock Hop,” “Death at the Disco,” “You Never Can Tell,” “An About Face,” and “Rosie.”  She was awarded the African American Playwrights Exchange 2008/2009 Award for Musical Theatre (“Madam”), and was a Pen and Brush Finalist in the Musical Theatre category for “Madam.”  Rogers resides in Putnam County with her husband and two children.

Students from Brewster High School’s Performing Arts department will perform as well as serve pancakes. on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 8:00am to 11:00am at Applebee’s in Brewster.

This is one of the major fundraiser’s they hold throughout the year to raise money for trips and programs for the students.  Last year, the BHS Booster’s raised money to send the Marching Band to perform at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in the  Parade of Dreams.

Talk about hardworking, after the students perform at Applebee’s, they head back to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) to rehearse for the Spring Musical, and then in the evening they will perform highlight’s from this year’s musical, Oklahoma!, at the annual Brewster Education Foundation (BEF) Gala.  This year the BEF is honoring the Performing Arts in our schools.  An ensemble of students from the orchestra known as the “Foggintown Fiddlers” will also be performing that evening.

On March 17, 2010 the BHS Marching Band will once again perform in NYC’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.  This will be the third time the band has performed at the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world.  They have won awards for past performances and we look forward to another outstanding event.   To purchase tickets for this event go to:  http://www.bef.org/docs/BEF2010AnnualGala.pdf

The Brewster Central School District is very proud of their  performing arts program. Approximately 2900 students in grades K-9 are receiving weekly classroom music instruction during the school day. They are being educated in various aspects of music education such as notation, pitch, rhythm, instrument recognition, historical and ethnic effects on music and evaluation of the many styles of music which exist throughout history. In addition, more than 1,000 students are experiencing the joys of creating music by participating in one or more of our many performing ensembles. These include choirs beginning in grade three, string and band instruments beginning and grade four and outstanding theater presentations at the middle school and high school.

How does a contractor from a tough Brooklyn neighborhood become an impassioned animal advocate?  In the award-winning documentary THE WITNESS, Eddie Lama explains how he feared and avoided animals for most of his life, until the love of a kitten opened his heart, inspiring him to rescue abandoned animals and bring his message of compassion to the streets of New York.  This moving film will be screened at the Mahopac Public Library on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 pm; registration is requested.  Working hard to overcome the many challenges of growing up in a poor and violent Brooklyn neighborhood, Eddie Lama developed a deep sense of identification with the vulnerable and voiceless beings of our world.

In one of the most moving sections of The Witness, he describes the harrowing experience of being beaten and left for dead, crying out for help and no one responding. Eddie then shares how this trauma helped him understand the plight of animals, who so often endure violence with no one to even witness their tragic fate, much less advocate on their behalf. With humor and sincerity, Eddie tells the story of his remarkable change in consciousness.

The Witness was produced by Tribe of Heart, a charitable non-profit organization that produces documentary films, along with outreach and educational programs, in service of a more just and compassionate future. Based in Ithaca, New York, the organization was founded in 2000 by Jenny Stein and James LaVeck, who work as director and producer respectively.

The Witness is the second in a series of documentary film screenings at the Mahopac Public Library.  The theme of these films, Protect All Livings Creatures, brings the message of animal advocacy, animal rescue and animal rights to audiences in Putnam County.  The series was initiated by Shanti Urreta, an educator and advocate of animal awareness and conscious eating.
